The designs of Japanese lacquer did not develop in a vacuum. There was a regular exchange of motifs with other forms of Japanese art and crafts. The kimono on the left features a pair of pheasants hiding under flowering plants. The one on the right depicts a view of the Itsukushima Shrine.
