Water was an important element in Hindu and Buddhist rituals and was used to purify the image of a deity during a so-called puja ceremony. A great variety of bronze artefacts were used for this purpose, probably also including this container for water suspended from a chain. The lid displays three circular tiers of stylized mountains representing the cosmos.
