When the multi-coloured Japanese porcelain first appeared on the Dutch market, it created quite a stir. The finest porcelain came from the Kakiemon workshop, which produced porcelain for the top end of the Japanese and European markets. While the decorations on this vase look very Japanese, they are nevertheless adapted to European taste. The motifs are much more symmetrical than was customary in Japan.
