During the Edo Period (1603-1868), Yixing teapots were traded in Japan, where they were also imitated. In the 19th century, kilns in the Japanese city of Tokoname were producing large quantities of imitation Yixing teapots. This particular teapot is used for the Japanese green tea ceremony, known as sencha, which employs a pot characterized by its drum-shaped body and a short spout and handle.
