In the 19th century fine white porcelain decorated with subtly painted motifs, usually in a light blue, was made in the town of Mikawachi (near Nagasaki). This distinguishes it from 18th century Mikawachi porcelain, which was often less delicately painted in a darker blue, an example of which are the candlesticks at the left.
