Ovoid jar with a dark brown glaze, anonymous, c. 700 - c. 899
In ceramics from the Tang period the emphasis was on a sturdy, powerful form. Here, this form has been further accentuated by the dark glaze, which had to be deep and rich in colour. The lugs on this storage jar were probably intended to accommodate a cord, which would have secured a piece of cloth placed over the mouth of the jar.
