Jar, anonymous, c. -206 - c. -9

turning, h 20.7cm × d 8.4cm More details

This jar was used in a burial ritual. Although made of earthenware, the jar mimics the shape and colour of much more expensive materials, such as lacquers and bronze. The graceful volutes in the friezes presumably refer to clouds on which the deceased could ascend to heaven.
