A cong is a straight tube with a circular bore and square outer section made of jade. Dark-coloured congs with small round eyes at the corners have been excavated along the Yangzi River. The object’s original purpose remains a mystery. It was frequently imitated in subsequent eras, as seen in this small example, and used in ceremonies paying homage to the Earth.
