Karuppannasamy, anonymous, c. 1600 - c. 1700
Karuppannasamy is venerated in the countryside of Tamil Nadu. Unlike the gods revered throughout India (with the exception of the Goddess), most local village deities are not vegetarians. Karuppannasamy gladly receives blood sacrifices and so chickens and goats are regularly slaughtered for him, in return for which he protects the fields. The non-vegetarian gods are considered fierce and unpredictable. Images of Karuppannasamy are therefore never kept at home.
