Dishes decorated with Dutch provincial and city coats of arms were made in China in the beginning of the 18th century. In the centre of this dish are the arms of Amsterdam framed in a gate, a design most likely derived from the illustrated title page of a European book. The Chinese painter adapted the details at his own discretion.
