Such statues may have been ordered by followers of the lamas (Buddhist religious teachers) and then offered to a monastery. This was considered a great tribute. Like those of the gods (see the nearby Kuvera), these statues were often consecrated by placing small objects of symbolic value in them. Under the foot of the right statue is a red lacquer seal, possibly to protect and close off such an object.

Description

Beeld van de lama Dpal ldan tshul khrims (1333-1399), één van de meesters in de transmissie van de Lam ‘bras (‘Pad en resultaat’) doctrine binnen de Sakyapa school van Tibetaans boeddhisme. Met de rechterhand maakt de lama het gebaar van onderwijs (vitarkamudra) en de linker ligt open in de schoot. Op de achterkant van de lotussokkel staat een Tibetaanse inscriptie dat leest ‘Eer aan Dpal ldan tshul khrims pa’.
