Bodhisattva Jizo, anonymous, c. 1200 - c. 1250

wood (plant material), h 47cm More details

Jizo is a saviour of souls. He is a bodhisattva, an enlightened being who delays his own redemption to help mankind. The gentle face is stylized, but the posture of the body displays a certain realism, with some tension in the shoulder of the raised left arm. This animating effect appeared in Japanese sculpture by 1200.

This work belongs to Bodhisattva Jizo (AK-MAK-116)
