Set of Boxes with Fragments of Patterned Paper, Kamisaka Yukichi, c. 1910 - c. 1925
Yukichi used torn pieces of paper – rendered in lacquer, of course – to recreate landscapes. The patterns on the ‘paper’ contribute to this: marbled paper for the rivers, here and there a tree or a few birds. He made lavish use of inlays with small pieces of gold leaf. The design may well have been conceived by his older brother Sekka.
