In Batavia (now Jakarta), Philipp Franz von Siebold hired the Chinese writer Guo Chengzhang (1802–?) as a collaborator on Chinese-Japanese publications. Guo lived in Leiden from 1830 to 1835 and calligraphed two Chinese-Japanese dictionaries and texts in Von Siebold’s publication on Japan, Nippon. He was also the tutor of J.J. Hoffmann, professor of Chinese and Japanese at Leiden University from 1855.
