Portrait of a Woman in a Koto, Augusta Curiel, c. 1904 - c. 1937
photographic support, h 166mm × w 107mm More details
From beneath her elegant angisa (folded headscarf), this woman looks straight into the camera. Her widefitting koto gives her a distinguished appearance. This characterful portrait was taken by Surinamese photographer Augusta Curiel. From 1904 she ran a photography business from home, together with her sister Anna. The pioneering entrepreneurs soon became the country’s most sought-after photographers. Their company was the first to obtain the title of purveyor to the Dutch royal household in Suriname.
