Southam describes the early 21st-century Dutch landscape with only the sparest of means. He works in the spirit of Mondriaan, and accordingly his compositions are remarkably minimal: a vast sky, a horizon no more than a line, and in the foreground the furrowed soil dotted with light brown clumps of clay. The nearby airport and the busiest road network in the country are hardly to be seen.
