Oriental porcelain was no longer so fashionable at the end of the 18th century, yet in practice it continued to be widely used. This salad bowl was made to complete the Japanese service of the Amsterdam regent David van Lennep. The decorations follow those found on colourful Imari porcelain, but the painting is coarser, and the form of the salad bowl does not occur in Japanese ceramics.
